Building A Socially Responsible Investment Portfolio
Our values impact the ways in which we shop, socialize, and even invest. When it comes to investments, more and more people are wanting to invest in companies with whom they share values. In this video we will discuss one of the more simple approaches: Socially Responsible Investing (or SRI).
What is SRI (or Socially Responsible Investing)?
Socially responsible investing is an investing strategy that intends to create social change while generating a financial return. Some early SRI considerations were things like alcohol, tobacco, weapons, or gambling. Investors currently factor in things like fossil fuel producers, human rights, social justice, and the environment, to name a few.
How to get started:
Understanding what is important to you and what you value most is the foundation of creating a socially responsible portfolio. As an exercise, take a pen and paper and write three values that you would measure your investments against. Then, communicate with your financial advisor. They can help you with your due diligence before making important investment decisions.
SRI spans a growing range of products and asset classes, embracing not only stocks, but also cash, fixed income and alternative investments. Sustainable investors, like conventional investors, seek a competitive financial return on their investments.
Your values matter and factoring in the implications of these on your investments is something we strive to do for our clients.
